ST. LOUIS 0 IMPACT 3
MONTREAL – In the third game of its four game home stand the Montreal Impact (6-7-5) shut out AC St. Louis (3-10-4) 3-0, Wednesday, at Saputo Stadium.
The Impact dominated its opponent 13-5 in shots.
"Tonight, we saw a tight knit team on the field," remarked Montreal Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos. "We were ready to fight for the win and we fully deserve it because we offered the best performance out there on the field."
The Impact opened up the scoring at the 24th minute. After receiving a long pass from Philippe Billy coming from the left side of the field, rookie forward Reda Agourram deeked out defender Mark Bloom near the corner area and scored his second goal of the season with a low shot from inside the 18-yard box.
"It was really good for the team to go up by two goals before the end of the first half tonight. That lead gave us the confidence we needed for the rest of the game," noted Agourram. "I am happy to have contributed by scoring. We had great chemistry as a team on the field tonight and I have a good feeling for the games to come."
The Impact doubled its lead less than five minutes later. The play all started with a well calculated tackle from Simon Gatti in St. Louis’s territory. After receiving a short pass from Billy, Gatti then centered the ball inside the six-meter box. Midfielder Tony Donatelli (29th minute) completed the play by netting his 5th goal of the season with a header to Dufty’s left.
After receiving a pass from Eduardo Sebrango, midfielder Antonio Ribeiro who was playing in his first game back with Montreal, scored the insurrance goal at the 82nd minute.
“Tonight’s game was really a dream come back for me,” said Ribeiro. “We had a mission tonight and that was to be first on the ball at every occasion. We had to be patient to create scoring opportunities and that’s exactly what we did. This win is really positive for the Impact and I am confident that this is the start of a winning sequence."
Goalkeeper Srdjan Djekanovic, who played his 11th concecutive game, signed his fourth shutout of the season.
The match ended with both teams playing ten a side after Impact midfielder Filipe Soares along with AC St-Louis midfielder Gauchinho were both ejected at the 67th minute. Soares will therefore be suspended for one game.
Forward Ali Gerba and defender Wesley Charles, who recently joined the Montreal were on the starting lineup.
Goalkeeper Matt Jordan (groin), defender Stephen deRoux (cheek bone) and midfielder Leonardo Di Lorenzo (calf) did not play due to injuries.
The Impact will complete its four game home stand on Wednesday July 28th by facing its Canadian rivals the Vancouver Whitecaps (radio-canada.ca/sports, CKAC Sports, THE TEAM 990). OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
6th minute – Defender Nevio Pizzolitto deflected Philippe Billy’s corner with a header and goalkeeper Alec Dufty made the save by throwing himself on the ground.
43rd minute – After a lob pass from Filipe Soares and a failed clearing attempt by the St.Louis defence, Reda Agourram made a cisor kick which ended up just to the left of the goal.
